Monday, May 5th - Wednesday, May 7th

This Monday was probably the most memorable day I've had so far on the trip, and it's sure going to be hard to top. We had class in town at the Ionian University with a Greek professor that also teaches at a university in Britain. Class was 10-1pm and covered different parts of the Middle Ages. It included information on subjects such as the Byzantine Empire and the Barbarians, but I know you're not interested in that. After class let out at 1pm and we got lunch, the group and I went to explore a place on the island called 'Old Fort'. This has been around for several centuries and had been used to defend Corfu against enemies back in ancient times. Some of the pictures I got were simply breathtaking, and I can't wait to put them up.

That night for dinner, we went to the same restaurant that we went to the first night on the coast of the sea. I got a dish called moussaka, which is a eggplant and beef layered dish that looks something like lasagna. It was pretty delicious just like all the meals I've had so far, and as an added bonus we got to see planes land at the local Corfu airport.

Tuesday, we had another class from 10am-1pm dealing with the Middle Ages. After class, we headed to the Asian Art Museum located in town and checked out the exhibits. Much of the art was incredibly intricate and some of the ways that the art is made is simply astonishing. One of my fellow study abroad students is a history major and is basically a walking encyclopedia, so going to the museum with him made the whole experience 10x better.

Today, we had a new Greek professor for class and she will be teaching the entire next section, which is Ancient Greece. Afterward, we went to the New Fort, which was constructed by the British long after the Old Fort in order to fend off attackers. We were able to travel all the way to the top and see simply awesome views of the surrounding sea and city. A perfect day didn't hurt the quality of our views, either. Right when we returned from the fort, many of us went down to the hotel pool to help get rid of the terrible tan lines that were starting to develop from our days in the sun. Hanging by the pool for several hours after class sure helps your mind recover. After relaxing, my roommate and I went to the neighboring hotel to use their fitness equipment. This is a 30 day membership that we bought, so we plan to make the most of it and stay in great shape during the trip. It's kind of necessary because of all the delicious food we have been eating so far! Dinner afterwards is always a relaxing and fun time, and we have started to become a lot closer with the multi-lingual owner of George's restaurant right next door to the hotel.
